I came across this news item on the BBC website. A shocking reminder of the the way sexism and racism and power can operate in our so called liberal society. It is also a reminder of the continued need to draw young people’s attention to such things throughout their education.
The article and film clip can be found here, and relates to a photographic exhibition by Hank Willis Thomas.
” The way Americans depict race and gender has been a constant theme in photographer Hank Willis Thomas’ work”.
The BBC item goes on to state: “The Unbranded: A Century of White Women 1915-2015 examines 100 advertising images free of text or graphics. The newly “unbranded” images are stark in their portrayal of the dynamics of power, race, and sexuality”.
